Chih-P'Ing Chou,Der-Lin Chao,Joanne Chiang: Advanced Reader of Modern Chinese (Two-Volume Set), Volumes I and II : China's Own Critics: Volume I: Text and Volume II: Vocabulary & Sentence Patterns

Description
This textbook presents a selection of thirteen expository essays written from the 1920s through the 1980s by influential Chinese intellectuals on controversial issues of their times, including the emancipation of women, the reforms of the Chinese language, the implementation of modernization, and freedom and patriotism. To provoke classroom discussion, each topic is treated by essayists with opposing views. Prepared for American students who have already completed two years of Chinese and who are interested in reading original documents, the book juxtaposes traditional and simplified characters for the text and vocabulary so that students can be exposed to both versions of Chinese characters. Each of the thirteen texts is followed by a detailed glossary, annotated in English, with suggested topics for class discussion. An index at the end of the book allows students easy access to the vocabulary items. Audio and video materials are available for use with this text. The films of Quentin Tarantino are ripe for philosophical speculation, raising compelling questions about justice and ethics, violence and aggression, the nature of causality, and the flow of time. In this witty collection of articles, no subject is too taboo for the writers to tackle. Knoxville's WNOX pdf From an aesthetic meditation on the use of spraying blood in Kill Bill to the conundrum of translation and reference in Vincent and Jules' discussion about French Big Macs in Pulp Fiction, Tarantino and Philosophy shies away from nothing. Is The Bride a heroic figure, even though she's motivated solely by revenge? How is Tarantino able to create a coherent story when he jumps between past, future, and present? The philosophers in this book take on those questions and more in essays as provocative as the films themselves.
